Epiphyllum ‘Pegasus’ - Pegasus Orchid Cactus

Epiphyllum Pegasus is a bunchy plant, with multiple succulent stems erect to drooping. Devoid of leaves, this cactus develops long chlorophyllian stems, flat and crenellated, more rarely with 3 ribs. Branching and flower buds arise from the areolas on the ribs. From the middle of the green stems, long aerial roots can appear and develop which absorb atmospheric humidity.

Flowers will bloom up to 8 inches (20 cm) wide and will stay open for 3 to 4 days. These flowers bloom in bright fuschia and lavendar with a golden orange mid-stripe. The perianth in trumpet is divided into multiple red and pink tepals, including a circle of more distant and aerial tepals.

How to Grow and Care

This hybrid epiphyllum is fortunately much more tough in cultivation than its botanical parents. This tropical cactus maintains itself a bit like a tropical fern: in clear shade, without direct sun, and in a slightly humid atmosphere; he may appreciate a little misting with rainwater.
It is planted in a mixture of well decomposed potting soil and heather earth , with a little thick, non-calcareous sand, and possibly bone powder which will serve as a slow-release fertilizer . It does not need a large pot and will therefore be ballasted either in a large plant pot with large pebbles below the pot which allow free drainage , or in suspension.
From April to September, flowering and growth period, watering is regular, with fresh water, so as not to let the soil dry between each watering. Epiphyllum Pegasus prefers a temperature that does not exceed 28 ° C. The flower buds arrive from April to June, more numerous in May.
If some people wither sometimes, it is because the plant is not necessarily able to assume them all, and this is normal. It can be helped by fertilizer very low in nitrogen (flowering). Then comes the period of growth of new stems. Then the epiphyllum 'Pegagus' can be fed with a slightly more nitrogenous, balanced fertilizer. The epiphyllum will be good in the house or outside under the cover of trees...
