Peonies do not bloom, discover why

These herbaceous originating in the Asian continent, can be found today in any corner of the world, they give us a great multiplicity of colors at the beginning of spring and they are very used, especially in a decorative way (as a cut flower), even last days we mentioned them for making bouquets with flowers from the garden.

Many are gardeners who grow peonies in their garden, however, sometimes they must face the sadness of not seeing them bloom or that their buds turn black and dry.
Understanding this problem is the fate of our note today.

Flowering in peonies (as in most herbaceous plants) is controlled by factors such as lighting, nutrients, premature loss of foliage, transplants, as well as various diseases that the plant can usually suffer from weather conditions.

Planting depth can also affect them. But we will be more specific, here the details:

Why don't peonies bloom well?

The lighting: Are your peonies getting enough light?
Nearby trees and shrubs can be a problem if they are very close to peonies, not only because they take away light, but also compete for space and nutrients through the root system and, unfortunately, peonies usually they lose the battle, that is, they are so busy with their roots that they "forget" their flowers. Any tree should be at least 3m away.
Usually these beautiful plants need a minimum of six hours of sunshine a day, especially during the morning and sunset, protecting them from the strong midday sun.

Nutrients: Peonies resist excess nutrients or fertilizers, which is even a mistake you can be making almost without realizing it, for example, fertilizing the surrounding grass. This overfeeding results in more abundant foliage and lack of flowers. The best way to pay for peonies is to apply a balanced and natural organic compost or compost (never one with a high nitrogen content), we can even use a more specific nutrient such as bone meal. If the substrate in which they are already is of quality, with only one application of compost we will feed them without damaging the flowering.

Foliage: Eliminating the foliage too soon (before the roots have accumulated enough nutrients) is also a problem as it can reduce and even completely prevent the flowering of peonies. Keep the foliage healthy and careful throughout the season.

Planting depth: Depending on the type of peony you have planted, we must calculate the planting depth, usually the herbaceous are about 5 cm deep and the trees are about 10 or 15 cm. When I talk about these distances, I mean specifically that the shoots are at that distance.

While the roots will then do their own work and deepen, if we sow them too deeply from the beginning, we could complicate this task so that the roots find their correct position and even sprout correctly.

Excess moisture in the soil: A flooded and poorly drained soil will wreak havoc with the peonies, so it is very important that if the soil where you are going to plant them is not good, make a repair of it by removing the soil and mixing with materials such as perlite that facilitate aeration and drainage .

A recent transplant: Did you just plant your specimen or transplanted it recently? The truth is that peonies can get in a very bad mood for a whole year or more after a transplant, they do not like root manipulation, so if you have transplanted it, it can be one of the causes that do not give you flowers this year.

Diseases and weather: black floral button Late frosts are a big problem, since if we have a frost when buds or flower buds have already appeared, it is most likely that they "burn" and fall.

If the buds blacken and fall, it may be due to the stress of being with drought conditions, the peonies need regular watering (twice a week) and more frequent if they are in an area that is too hot.

Latency period: One of the issues that many times we do not take into account when identifying why peonies do not bloom, is the latency period, which is the downtime required by the plant. They need a cold winter that should be around a temperature between 7 ºC and -7 ºC for at least 20 to 37 days. If you have not had such a winter, it may be the cause of the lack of flowers.

Finally, it is very important to keep the entire area where the peonies are clean of weeds.

And so far our note today with the reasons why peonies resist flowering, take care of these details, not transplants and you can enjoy these beautiful, large and aromatic flowers ...

I leave you for the end, a beautiful photo gallery for you to enjoy, until next time!
