How to Flower a Jade Plant

Healthy and mature jade plants (Crassula argentea) should flower when daylight is shortest, usually during the winter holidays to early spring. However, some need more encouragement than just providing good basic care. These plants are heavily influenced by light and nighttime temperatures.

1
Fertilize your plant once a month in the spring and summer. You can fertilize jade plants with fertilizer made for African violets according to The Garden Helper. Stop fertilizing in the winter.

2
Water the plant once a week in the spring and summer. Give the plant a good soaking so that water drains out of the bottom of the pot and then let it dry out the rest of the week.

3
Water your jade plant once a month in the winter using the same method as the summer.

4
Move the plant in the late fall or early winter to a colder area of the house or outdoors. Long cold nights help stimulate flowering. The exact temperature can vary from plant to plant. If your jade is not blooming, it needs colder nighttime temperatures. However don't put it outside if temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

5
Cut back on how much light your jade plant gets in the winter. Too much light in the winter can prevent jades from flowering. They should get about 10 to 12 hours of darkness each night as they would in their native habitat of South Africa. However, if it does not flower, increase the dark time by one to two hours.
